Capital Families has been serving the communities of Langford, Colwood, Metchosin and The Highlands since 1989. We started as a small group of concerned community-minded people who saw a need for parents to gather and share their laughs, their worries, their needs and to generally connect with other parents. In the early days, 13 New Parent Discussion Groups were formed around the region and over time, Capital Families advocated for Neighbourhood Houses or Family Resource Programs and in 1993, the Victoria area saw 10 Neighbourhood Houses funded by the provincial government which included one in the Colwood/Langford area.
Capital Families was asked by the MP and MLA’s to move to the Western Communities and in 1989 the agency opened the Family Place on Painter Road, serving the families with Neighbourhood House programs, consisting of similar activities of those today – Parent and Tot Drop-in, Community Kitchen, Parent Support Groups, Family Counselling. In 1993 Capital Families opened REACH, the young parent and child centre, serving young parents who were finishing their secondary educations; in 2005, Capital Families opened Whale Spirit Early Enrichment Centre, a 25 space preschool and daycare centre.
Just recently the organization, in partnership with Sooke Schools #62, moved its programs and services to Ruth King Elementary in Langford and will be opening a renewed Whale Spirit daycare in the next few months.
Capital Families has consistently through the years supported community development ideas and projects that assist the health and social supports for children, youth and families.
